6 Tips to Improve Your Self-Control (and Feeling Happy)

6 Tips to Improve Your Self-Control (and Feeling Happy) Self-control has been the subject of philosophy and psychology, but we’ve also included it in our most famous books and even wrote songs about it! It’s obvious we’re obsessed with hacking self-control.In a world where treats are plenty and all sorts of things are possible, practicing self-control can seem like an impossible task. © Shutterstock.com | fizkesIn this guide, we’ll explain to you why you should care about self-control and the many benefits you can achieve with higher levels of self-control. We’ll then provide you six tips on improving your self-control.WHY FOCUS ON SELF-CONTROL?The first step towards improving self-control is about understanding what the term means and how it affects your life. What is self-control? According to the dictionary definition, self-control is “control over your feelings or actions” and “restraint exercised over one’s own impulses, emotions, or desires”.The first problem people encounter with self-control is to mix it up with the term total abstinence. Improving self-control isn’t the same as stopping yourself from doing something completely, but rather the ability to find a healthy balance between your desires and urges. For example, instead of eating a chocolate bar every time you feel like it, you might work towards only eating one once a week. The go al is not often to completely remove the desire (although this might be your goal, e.g. to stop smoking), but rather to ensure the desire isn’t harmful or limiting to your true desires or goals. The good news regarding self-control is the fact it can be improved. Self-control isn’t a set trait we either have or don’t have, but we can all enhance it at any stage in life. Just like you can build up your muscles, you can also increase your self-control.Why does it matter? One of the best examples of the importance of self-control came from a study in the late 1960s. Walter Mischel, a psychologist at Stanford, began studying children’s ability to delay gratification by presenting them with the famous ‘marshmallow dilemma’.Children were introduced to a situation where they could either eat a single marshmallow immediately or sit and wait while the tester comes back with another marshmallow, giving the child two of these treats.Mischel later noticed an interesting phenomenon wit hin the children he had studied and conducted a follow-up study. The children who had better self-control (waited for the second marshmallow) were performing better in high school, while the low self-control children (who ate the treat immediately) ended up suffering from problems related to self-regulation and coping with stress.Watch this cute video below of a modern re-creation of the classic test: Further studies have resulted in similar results. A study in New Zealand in the 1970s concluded that self-control from ages three to eleven was closely associated with success at the age of 32.According to the study, higher self-control reduced the likelihood of the person becoming a criminal or a substance abuser in adulthood. Obviously, other factors might have played a role in the results. But the study found that even when variables such as social class were taken into account, the link to self-control remained strong.According to research, low self-control means you place dispropor tionate weight on immediate costs and benefits. Instead of being able to look at different approaches in terms of short- and long-term benefits, low self-control simply prefers the short-term gain in nearly all circumstances. But if you improve your self-control, you can boost your brain capacity. Higher self-control can support other important functions such as:Cognitive flexibilityResistance to distractionsImpulse controlOverall, by improving self-control, you are improving your ability to plan and organize your behavior. This can be helpful in terms of achieving goals. For example, instead of spending your salary on a new outfit, which you don’t even need, you can set that money aside to buy a home later on in your life.TIP 1: SET GOALS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO CONTROLWhen you are trying to improve self-control, you have to understand what it is you are trying to control. This can be easily achieved by introducing goals to reaching a desired outcome. The key to setting goals to improve self-control is about being precise with your goals. Don’t set vague or open-ended goals, which don’t provide you enough tools and opportunities to improve. This video will show you how you can set smart goals. Saying “I will never be late” is not helpful in terms of creating the circumstances for success. It doesn’t give you any room for failure, it sets an unachievable task â€" you simply can’t guarantee you’ll never be late â€" and it can’t give you any tangible metrics to measure.Instead, opt for smaller and more defined goals. For example, say “I’ll start leaving to work 10 minutes earlier than normally”. This helps you avoid being late, it gives you a more achievable goal and you’re able to measure your success rates by keeping track of what time you left each morning. This can help you adjust your behavior and ensure success, which then strengthens your self-control.You should also list the reasons you want to achieve your goal. Saying “I want to stop being late” doesn’t outline the motivation behind it. Knowing why you’d like to do so (e.g. avoiding rushing, lowering stress, being able to show appreciation, improving your image in front of the boss) will help you stay motivated.Create a list by focusing on the following points:What are the downsides to your ‘bad’ or ‘unwanted’ behavior? What would you gain if you improved your self-control over the issue?Being aware of the benefits and the consequences of your behavior can be the extra motivator to changing the habit to something better. TIP 2: EXAMINE THE MOTIVATIONS BEHIND YOUR HARMFUL ACTIONSThe majority of our habits have a specific motivation behind them, even the harmful ones. For example, most smokers understand that smoking is bad for their health, but they still feel like going for a smoke in certain situations.Examine the motivations behind your actions and habits. Focus on whether you are driven by short- or long-term benefits. We humans are hard-wired to choose quicker gratification, even though it isn’t always the right option. Long-term goals such as “doing well at school” can be de-valued relative to short-term goals such as “playing video games”. If you have to choose between “playing games” or “reading two chapters in order to prepare for the exam in a month’s time”, most people will find the first option more motivating and rewarding.Simply by understanding your behavior is driven by a short-term reward, you can recognize the greater importance of focusing on the long-term rewards instead. You should also critically look at your behavior and the real motivation behind it.It might seem that indulging in cookies during the lunch break is all about the cookies and the sugary injection, but the underlying motivation might be something else.Perhaps you are storming off to the coffee shop because you’d love to have a longer break off from work or you simply love chatting to other people. By un derstanding the motivation behind the harmful action, you can try to improve your self-control over it.Learn more about the theories of what motivates us.[slideshare id=25560236doc=theoriesofmotivation-130824223005-phpapp01w=640h=330]TIP 3: LIMIT THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE HARMFUL BEHAVIOURIt might sound rather simple, but the old saying “out of sight, out of mind” actually works. By removing the harmful behavior out of your sight and making it harder for you to perform, you decrease the attractiveness of it.If you find yourself flicking through social media on your smartphone whilst you should be working, try to make the phone harder to reach. This is especially good if you don’t need it for client calls or such. If you need to hold on to the phone, simply hide away the social media apps with locking-apps like Focus Lock. The key is to modify the environment to reduce the attractiveness and ease of falling for the bad behavior. You can use tools like the app mentioned above or opt for the old-fashioned method of re-organizing your surroundings. Move away the biscuits from your office desk, get a high-desk to force you to stand occasionally during the day and so on.Even if you can’t physically remove the harmful act from your sight, apply mental images that limit the appeal of it and use abstract thinking. When you start dreaming of a cigarette break, bring those images of lung cancer patients to your mind. Associate the cigarette to your family weeping beside you in the hospital. It might sound drastic, but by creating a negative mental image of the action, you can boost your self-control. It’s much easier to say ‘no’ to something unattractive.Athletes are using mental images to perform significantly better (see slides).[slideshare id=18507737doc=mentalimagery-130409201115-phpapp02w=640h=330]TIP 4: INCREASE THE ATTRACTIVENESS OF THE RIGHT BEHAVIOUROn the other hand, you also want to make the positive counter behavior seem more attractive. You shoul d try to increase the attractiveness of the alternative, ‘good’ behavior by rewarding yourself and turning the behavior into something more fun.Self-control can be quickly improved if you acknowledge the successes you make with little rewards.Humans seek for that positivity rush, the release of dopamine, which can often be the cause for bad behaviors. But instead of getting the rush from checking your Facebook every five minutes, you can seek to turn it around and feel the rewards once you don’t check your social media. When it comes to rewarding the right behavior, the focus should be on positive and non-harmful reward. For instance, even if over-eating isn’t your problem you don’t want to replace smoking with eating a cookie, as this can quickly cause you another problem altogether. What could positive and non-harmful rewards be?It should be an action you love doing and it’s a good idea to swap between a few ideas, to avoid being stuck with another behavior. For example, you could go to the movies if you avoid being late from work for a whole week. You could buy your favorite magazine or sleep an hour longer on a Sunday morning if you visit the gym twice a week. At work, you could take ten minutes off to chat with a colleague if you finish a task in a specific amount of time. The key is to find a reward that gives you the feeling of accomplishment and which you don’t take for granted. For instance, if you already go to the movies every week, it isn’t going to feel like a reward. You should also try to boost self-control by turning the right behavior into something a bit more fun.If you are trying to get in shape, then going to the gym might not seem like the most fun thing to do. But what if, you go there together with your best friend? You could also try to attach fun activities like listening to an audiobook or music to working out. Instead of cleaning the house feeling miserable, take your mind off by talking to your friend on the phone.TIP 5: CHANGE YOUR LANGUAGE AROUND THE BEHAVIOURPerhaps surprisingly, language can play a big role in self-control. We can literally talk ourselves towards failure and deplete our self-control, even when we think we are “being tough”.Consider how often you view a task you don’t like by saying to yourself “I can’t” â€" “I can’t ever lose weight”, “I can’t finish this on time”. By saying, “I can’t”, you are reinforcing a feedback loop that reminds you of your limitations. The word doesn’t necessarily speak of actual ability, but your lack of desire to do something.Studies have shown that by swapping your language from “I can’t” to “I don’t”, you can take back control and stick to your plan. In fact, another study found self-affirmation could help you have more self-control.Furthermore, we tend to be quite good at preparing ourselves for a failure. How many times have you thought about working without distracting yourself, but countered it by thinki ng “Oh, I’ll never be able to write for an hour straight, I need a break”. But by thinking something is impossible, we reinforce the feeling it is impossible and reduce our self-control.In these situations, you can increase your self-control by overestimating the easiness of achieving your goal.Start thinking how the positive behavior isn’t actually hard and imagine the feeling of a positive outcome. Use language such as, “I can easily finish this worksheet within an hour and then I’ll feel even more productive” or “It’ll be so much fun going to the gym after work. All I need to do is get my gym back and off I go!’You should also talk about your goals aloud, not only to yourself but to other people as well. This reinforces the positive reaffirmation and it makes the goal more tangible. If other people are aware of your aims, they can help boost your self-control by positive encouragement.TIP 6: CREATE A RECOVERY PLANIt’s a good idea to define small steps, which help you bring closer to your ultimate goal.As we’ve already mentioned, don’t just aim for the moon straight away; create steps for building the rocket ship first. Become consistent in one thing and then move on to the next step. For example, try to limit your use of social media during the workday to three times a day from the previous five. Once you consistently achieve this, you can set a goal of two and so on.Perhaps more importantly, understand that you’ll probably experience setbacks and your self-control might fail. Don’t beat yourself over a failure â€" practice makes perfect and small setbacks are inevitable. In terms of self-control, it’s important to understand that just like your muscle power weakens at times, so does your self-control.Your self-control will automatically be at its lowest when:You’ve had inadequate sleepYou’re receiving poor nutrition, such as not eating enough or eating bad foods (lots of sugar, refined foods, ‘junk food’)You’re expe riencing emotional distress, such as stress, anxiety, fear, angerWhen you feel your self-control is depleted, analyze whether one of the above reasons influences your lack of self-control. By understanding the reason behind the lack of ‘willpower’, you might be able to rectify the situation or push yourself through the behavior. You’ll also need a recovery plan for situations when you’ve failed or you’re lacking self-control. If you are late for work, don’t give up and think you’ve failed. Instead, examine the situation and find the reason for being late. Perhaps you had a stressful day and you slept badly, which made you slower than usual in the morning. So, next time you struggle with self-control and you fall back to bad or unwanted behavior, do the following:#1: Tell yourself it’s not the end of the world. Your goal is still achievable.#2: Think carefully what was behind the dip in self-control and in behaving in the undesired manner:Was your ability to self-contro l diminished by lack of sleep, poor nutrition or emotional distress? If so, how can you improve the situation? Was it simply a momentary lapse?Does your plan of action need readjustment? I.e. are you starting to open those cupboards for the cookies, or is the audiobook/gym combination starting to lose its appeal? If so, how can you adjust your plan?#3: Continue working towards your goal.THE BOTTOM LINEOur modern lives are full of distractions and attractive short-term rewards. Leading a healthy lifestyle and staying productive at work isn’t always easy when you have all these treats and attractions luring you in.But ever since the marshmallow test, studies have highlighted the benefits of strong self-control. We can enjoy a more rewarding life, if we just focus a bit more on long-term benefits and take a more analytical look of our behavior.Hopefully, the above tips have shown you some simple ways on improving your self-control and taking ownership of your actions. We’ll leave you with this clever statement by Aristotle:“The self-controlled man craves for the things he ought, as he ought, and when he ought.”

Social Cognitive Theory in a K-8 Classroom Using Banduras Theory Free Essay Example, 1000 words

The learning, or cognitive patterns of individuals at school age, reach higher levels of awareness. From the perspective of an educational professional, along with the parents of the students, according to Abromitis (n. d.), Teachers and parents know well that children learn not only from direct instruction and performance, but also from their vicarious experiences, peer interaction, and even the media, (para. 1). Math Is Worth Learning Free Essays

Every person on this planet earth needs to know at least simple math to live a normal life style. Learning math can be a daunting task when you do not have the right tools or the right materials, especially if you grew up believing that math is hard and that you will never understand it. All humans need to get rid of any negative thinking that teachers, friends, or even a caring relative helped you build over the years and start believing in yourself. We will write a custom essay sample on Math Is Worth Learning or any similar topic only for you Order Now Learning Simple math is worthwhile because every job opportunity, every household responsibly, and most every personal interest involves mathematics to some degree, also with math you can know many pattern recognition and application to basic skills. Math is about recognizing patterns, and patterns occur in everything from traffic to weather to eating and sleeping. It is obvious that these pattern-containing topics affect a person’s daily life. Patterns also occur in nature – in the ripples on the surface of a pond, in the sun’s path across the sky, and even in snowflakes, zebra stripes, and broccoli buds. Though these patterns occur in such ways that an understanding of them is not necessary for survival or success in life, it is important to consider that mathematics are essential to even the most overlooked details. Math gives order and structure to what would otherwise be random and chaotic. Who can deny the importance of mathematics when human genetics rely on them? Thus, in these examples, it can be seen that math is everywhere, even if math is not necessary for survival. Having a general understanding of mathematics yields to immeasurable benefits. Math can be put to use in the grocery store and at the mall but also while watching television or reading the newspaper. For example, without mathematics, grocery shopping becomes much more expensive than it has to be. A person without knowledge of mathematics may assume that bulk purchases save money, but this is not an intelligent assumption; according to an article in the Sunday Times, 2010, buying in bulk is often intentionally made more expensive that buying individually. Specifically, â€Å"the newspaper found that the difference can be as much as 30%! † When applying for credit cards, many customers do not take into account the interest rates they are being charged. Many do not understand where their credit scores come from! Similarly, a weak statistics background may mislead an ad reader into believing a faulty success rate. For example, the fact that â€Å"eight out of ten women prefer† a specific brand of shampoo is not a valid reason to purchase it. What if two of the women surveyed lost all of their hair or developed a skin disease as a result of using this brand? How would the statistics look if the reader knew the whole story? Even for merely common-sense purposes, a general understanding of mathematics is necessary. The vast majority of high school and college students despise mathematics; it is difficult for this majority to realize that various seemingly-unrelated areas of study include math as a foundation. Music, art/design, and even athletics are built on mathematics. A pianist can benefit from patterns and sequences when composing much the same way that a golfer can benefit from math-based physics, trigonometry, and even statistics when driving. No matter which avenue a student pursues, math will somehow be present. It is not only the responsibility of a nurse, an engineer, or a physicist to know mathematics. Rather, it is in each student’s best interest that they apply, or at least consider, mathematics in all areas of life. The universal language of the world is math, and people have been using it for thousands of years across the world. Today’s society would not be in existence without the application of mathematics. By there example we now know why does simple math apply to most of the population. Without math our lives would be very different, and difficult In closing, I think that ideally, every person should strive for proficiency in as many different academic disciplines as possible. In a perfect society, everyone would be intelligent and posses the ability to succeed in any endeavor. Realistically this is completely impossible. With this being said, I think that it is more important to focus on an individual’s strengths instead of attempting to exploit his or her weaknesses. I enjoy math, and have traditionally done well in it. However, this does not imply that others should feel the same. Everyone has different talents and abilities and should not be penalized for a lack of ability or interest in a specific area of study. All individuals must be responsible for their academic choices but should also be encouraged to challenge themselves to reach their full potential. How to cite Math Is Worth Learning, Papers

Where Are We Headed free essay sample

Imagine living in a world where you are not in control of your own thoughts, where all the great thinkers of the past have been blurred from existence. In a world where life no longer involves beauty but instead, a controlled system that the government is capable of manipulating into anything they want. In Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, such a world is brought to pass as the reader engages in a description of the impacts of censorship forced on people living in this futuristic society. In a civilization where all individuality and personal thought is forbidden. All that is left is a senseless society unaware of their path of self destruction; they know only what the government wants them to know. By creating a world parallel to our own, Bradbury warns us of a future we very well could on the path to: a future of mind manipulation, misused technology, ignorance, and hatred. We will write a custom essay sample on Where Are We Headed? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page While Bradbury’s idea of a frightening future is very probable in some aspects; we can steer away from that path because we yearn to be well informed and curious towards the world. As the gravity of this nightmare Bradbury suggests becomes more frequent in our world today, we notice several similarities between our current world and the futuristic society Bradbury portrays. Montag, the protagonist of Fahrenheit 451 wants to know why his society is so unaware about the world; he is frustrated with the constant war and being ignorant of why they are always at war. â€Å"Is it because we’re having so much fun at home we’ve forgotten the world? Is it because we are so rich and the rest of the world is just so poor we don’t care if they are? I’ve heard rumors; the world is starving, but we’re all well fed† (73). This is very similar to our world today because frequently we take all that we have for granted; while we always have food on the table, safety, and great schooling. We forget about other places in the world that are so poor, and do we ever do anything about it? As demonstrated in the book they do not know anything about the world, they are kept completely oblivious. In our world we have the capability to be well informed, but we definitely do not take advantage of the resources we have. As young boy a cruel cousin challenged Montag to fill a sieve with sand to make a fool out of him. â€Å"†¦he sat trying to fill a sieve with sand†¦the faster he poured the faster if sifted through†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (78). I like to think of the sand as our knowledge or understanding, and the sieve as our comprehension. Often we just cram for a test, take the test and forget everything we ‘learned’. It’s just like the sieve and the sand, as the sand goes into the sieve it is only there for a short time before it sifts through. Any attempt to keep the sand in the sieve will fail, right? Wrong. What if you were to add water to the sand, to give it a greater consistency and potentially it would stay in the sieve? The water or what makes it stick is us actually learning and realizing a co ncept. In the world of Fahrenheit 451 no thinking or applying ever happens, thus making every learning event just sift right through them. This is similar with our world; often we do no apply things and learn from them, if we practiced this and grew from our daily experiences we would gain much more knowledge. As a generation that is very curious towards the world, we will never be brainwashed into complete censorship and isolation of our surroundings. Montag knows that his community is hated, but does not know why, he then thinks that books could get them out of the hole and make them aware of why things are the way they are. â€Å"Why are we hated so much? Do you know why? I sure don’t! Maybe books can get us out of the cave. They might just stop us from making the same insane mistakes over and over† (74). The world of Fahrenheit 451 does not know anything about other places in the world, but our generation, is far too curious to let that ever come to pass. We like to be well informed about what is going on is our society, but also in other societies too. In addition if we did not keep track of what happens in both our society and others’ we would just keep making the same mistakes others have made; we would never progress. Granger a leader of the â€Å"Book People † has committed his life to preserving literature; his goal is to get the people to remember. â€Å"When they ask us what we’re doing, you can say, we’re remembering. That’s where we’ll win out in the long run. And one day we’ll remember so much that we’ll build the biggest steam shovel in history and dig the biggest grave of all time and shove our war in and cover it up† (164). This passage from the book really demonstrates well how they want to remember, and know what happened in the past. They want to get rid of war and to comprehend why things are the way they are. In knowing this, I do not believe us as the assertive people we are today would ever let the government take that much control. Although Bradbury’s prediction of an alarming future is possible in some ways; still, we can change our destiny because we desire to be very well up to date and knowledgeable about the world. In conclusion this forecast of the future could never come to pass because, we have the ability to think deeply about things, and this will keep us strong in loving literature. Additionally we are too curious of people to let the government censor so much of our lives. We like to have authority and to have a say in society controversies, nevertheless our society could never reach the severity of the foreshadowed fantasy world of Fahrenheit 451.

Caesar essays

Caesar essays Caesar was often overlooked by many as a possible threat or future conqueror. Even as a mere boy he presented himself to the people as a possible candidate for priesthood. Sulla not blinded with Caesars age, discussed the question of whether or not to have him put to death. The advisors of the time found it absurd and felt there was no point in killing a boy like him. Sulla replied, That they must be lacking in intelligence if they did not see that in this boy there were many Mariuses. This was an opportunity that would not be abundant in nature but would linger on to haunt those not favoring Caesars views or actions. From a very young age Caesar demonstrated immeasurable courage and lack of fear of death. He was captured near the island of Pharmacusa by some of the pirates who controlled the sea. His actions and emotions were filled with disregard, and only took control of his situation as a prisoner and turned himself into their leader. As soon as he was set free, he manned some ships, captured and imprisoned the pirates, then took the pirates out of prison and crucified them. This was just an example of the characteristic and capabilities that Caesar would be inclined to pursue. In Rome Caesar won an astounding reputation and great popularity with his eloquence, easy manners, and friendly way in which he merged with people. With those persuasions he was able to be elected to priesthood and simultaneously made the senate and the nobles afraid that he would go on to lead the people forward on a course of violent extremism. As Plutarch quoted Caesar, Today, mother you will see your son either as high priest or as an exile, further demonstrating the uneasiness and scorn the senate had towards Caesar. Caesars intentions were divulged when he was reading on Alexander and his conquests and Plutarch described him as bursting into tears. Dont you think that I have something wo...

E-Commerce - Case Study Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4250 words

E-Commerce - Case Study - Essay Example Since each party has their own case against each other discussing the cases between parties separately for a better understanding of the issues shall be the norm of this paper. At the end of each case an advice will be given from my contemplation of the merits of each of the case. This case study involves A (Alfred), B (Bert), C (CDE Corporation), Freegames, and Freepcgames portal. Freepcgames is a portal that is involved in providing free computer game programs to its subscribers who pays a monthly subscription fee. Freegames is the local company that represents Freepcgames. It should be noted that Freepcgames.com is a portal registered in the United States. From the facts of the case it is not apparent if the use of Freegames or Freepcgames is a registered trademark or company brand name. Several parties each with their own interest and culpabilities have brought legal actions against one another to protect their rights and legal interests. I shall evaluate the merits of each case between the protagonists and the legal anchors if possible shall be used to provide a solid base for the critical analysis. In some cases I shall provide advice on what charge and the basis of the charges to bring the other party to court. There will be instances wherein I will be providing legal advice or defence for Freegames, since for all intents and purposes Freegames, is my client in this simulated legal situation. The legal advice provided herein remains a theoretical exercise and shall be a hyperbolic representation of an actual legal advice that may be provided to resolve legal issues for Freegames in the future that relates to the instant issues. A (Alfred) vs. Freepcgames.com From the facts of the case it is evident that the whole problem started with Alfred’s use of his company’s resources for personal gain. His case against Freepcgames, com for the recovery of his money shall not prosper because the case arose from his own negligence. A, agreed to the terms and condition of Freegames at the onset and therefore any problem arising from the use of his username and password combination is his responsibility. It should be noted that â€Å"Duty of Care†1 in order for Tort to settle against Freegames the claimant should have his hands dry and clean. Washing his hands of his own culpability and assigning blame to Freepcgames contrary to the tenets of the law and it is against the ambit of human morality. Lord Atkin has set down the test when ‘duties of care’ arises in the following details of Donohue v Stevenson. â€Å"You must take reasonable care to avoid acts or omissions which you can reasonably foresee would be likely to injure your neighbour. Who then, in law is my neighbour? The answers seems to be – persons who are closely and directly affected by my act that I ought reasonably to have them in my contemplation as being so affected when I am directing my mind to the acts or omissions which are called into q uestions†(per Lord Atkin [1932] AC 562 at p 580) It should be noted, that the username, password combination is the established means in which the identity of a person transacting business in the internet is established. International Issues in Accounting and Audit Essay

International Issues in Accounting and Audit - Essay Example Considering the growing complexity of accounting work, many countries have adopted IFRS as their basis for financial reporting as it is expected that IFRS can significantly improve the quality of information on corporate finance. Although there are numerous potential advantages associated with a common set of global reporting standards, it is difficult to implement IFRS in a way that the benefits of a harmonised reporting system could be achieved. This paper will critically explore and discuss the potential benefits as well as negative impacts/limitations of adopting the IFRS in the United Kingdom. International Financial Reporting Standards, commonly abbreviated as IFRS, are designed as a common global reporting framework for businesses so as to make company accounts well understandable and comparable despite cross-border barriers. The growing international shareholding and trade activities make it necessary to establish a common global language for business affairs with regard to accounting and reporting. Such a common global framework is also particularly important for firms that have a presence in several countries. Today the IFRSs increasingly replace different national accounting standards as multinational corporations wish to keep their accounts easily understandable and comparable across the globe. IFRS are authorised on the ground of historical cost paradigm with the exception of IAS 29 and IFRIC 7, which are authorised on the ground of constant purchasing power paradigm (Legardere, 2007). Although IFRS was initially introduced as a framework to harmonise accounting practices and procedures across the European Union, this concept has progressively become attractive around the world due to the increased value of harmonisation. IFRS are sometimes referred to as the original name of International Accounting Standards (IAS). The International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) issued IAS over the period 1973-2001. On 1st April 2001, the new International Accounting Standards Boards (IASB) undertook the responsibility for setting international accounting standards from the IASC (Value based management.net, n.d.).

Diversity Statement - The Appalachian Mountains :: College Admissions Essays

Diversity Statement - The Appalachian Mountains    I was raised in an ultra-conservative Pentecostal Holiness church in the Appalachian Mountains. There were snake handlers in our church. It was thought that it tested one's faith to pick up a poisonous snake -- God wouldn't allow it to bite you if you had faith. However, I was always afraid that to pick up a snake would greatly increase God's propensity to smite me via death by snakebite. I did not have enough faith. I've never encountered a miracle -- I've never had a dream come true. I therefore can't help but lack faith.    To my great fortune, I've had many people help me along the way who didn't have to and who stood nothing to gain by helping me. Teachers gave me after-hours help; when I didn't know how I would pay for school, the financial aid office gave me a scholarship. These people helped me for no reason other than the mere fact that I am a human being, worthy of help when in need. Although I didn't have faith, they gave me hope.    This is why I have worked at a local homeless shelter for the past two years.   I feel like I can do the same thing -- help a person or two merely on the basis of our shared humanity. I enjoy paying back some of the help society has given me. I teach a computer class at the shelter, but everyone gets free therapy on the side. Most of those people aren't different in some essential way from the homed or those who have jobs, but life has often dealt them a losing hand to begin with. I tell them that I also had a losing hand, but I never gave up hope. Often, hope is all I had -- but it was enough to keep me pressing onward.

Football And Difficulty Of Using It For Development Education Essay

Football is our National athletics. It can be found in all countries of society, from watching unrecorded coverage of games to acquiring up to the minute intelligence on the many athleticss channels on Television, to reading studies, analysis and narratives in our newspapers. It is a moot point in many bars, concerns and schools up and down the state every hebdomad. We have incorporated its nomenclature into our linguistic communication and for some, it can take to many a insomniac dark. It gives intending and provides individuality for a infinite assortment of people. Due to its obvious influence on society, many athleticss administrations now see football non merely as a interest but the ideal tool to prosecute and develop persons, groups and communities likewise. Many companies now use football as a device to help societal inclusion, equality, authorization, to cut down offense and better wellness. Meanwhile, the administrations who, drama, govern and modulate the athletics, in the signifier of the Football Association ( FA ) , clubs both professional and recreational, the FA Premier League and educational establishments, are focused on developing people to play or train the game in its many competitory scenes. Although the athletics generates a immense sum of enthusiasm, utilizing football as a development tool can turn out to be a slightly complicated. Many companies and administrations are utilizing football for grounds that could be construed as selfish, and this brings an air of contradiction to what the FA are endeavoring to accomplish. For illustration in their hunt to happen and develop the following George Best, Trevor Francis, Gary Lineker or Gareth Bale, Professional nine may hold a really different docket to state a community group, who are looking at utilizing football as a device to link with ‘marginalised immature people ‘ . Much is the same with recreational grassroots nines whose chief aim is to better public presentation. These nines would no uncertainty battle to happen the common land with administrations trying to authorise sportsmen/women with disablements. These issues are non uncommon in the ‘football household ‘ , and as a consequence, footba ll development has become a widely debated topic. This does n't intend that nil positive has come from the work done by the administrations concerned. However, as football dramas such an of import portion in our civilization, it is of import to understand the political relations and concern involvements of those concerned with the athletics before anyone can come to any existent decisions about the potency it has to offer as an effectual medium for the development of athleticss or societal intercession. Over the last 20 old ages at that place has been an inflow of books, paperss and studies that reflect the more serious side of football and its impact on society. This dates back to the 1980s when football had taken a downward spiral and arguments on the best manner to run the athletics was really taken up by the authorities who were sing direct ordinance of the game. This action was brought approximately due to the catastrophes of Heysel, Bradford and Hillsborough every bit good as the rise in vandalism. Their reaction was to endanger the evidently uninterested football governments with an array of drastic steps that if applied could hold had damaging effects on the athletics from grassroots to the professional phase. However, the publication in 1989 of the Heysel and Taylor Reports seemed to quiet issues down slightly, and opened up chances for province and corporate investing. This saw the gradual rise of professionalism and commerce within the administrations responsible for foot ball. From the early 1990s, Football gained more on a repute for professionalism as bowl up and down the state were refurbished or freshly built, which hastened the ‘gentrification ‘ of the athletics. Around this clip, involvement began to look within academic circles as Rogan Taylor, the inspiration behind the Football Supporters Association, founded a research undertaking at the University of Liverpool. This was followed by others within instruction that brought approximately and applied new thoughts, techniques and different positions on surveies and probes based on the athletics. Then in 1996, England was hosts to European Championships. This set the phase to demo how the athleticss popularity had increased, which confirmed to the so in power Labour Party that football had become deserving of authorities attending. However, despite the obvious spin and election tactics of MPs playing football with top names in football and the similar, politicians did hold concerns on the general province and way of the game. There were to five chief facets of concern: The first was based on the manner the Football Association conducted its direction and ordinance of the game as a whole. There was a figure of people/groups that saw the FA as the prima figure responsible for the use of the athletics refering its commercial involvements ; the downgrading of such competitions as the FA Cup ; fishy fiscal direction that saw the FA squander money and the inconsistent public presentation of our national squad. The one concern was to how the 92-member FA Council represented the many avenues of involvement in the game, if at all! Second, issues were raised on nine ownership and the manner that they were being run. The debut of the FA Premier League brought about a displacement in club ownership. This saw many protagonists marginalised as a consequence. A perfect illustration of this was the death of Wimbledon FC, a squad I had supported since the 80 ‘s, nevertheless there is an of all time turning list of nines being consumed and destroyed by those with their ain docket and vested concern involvements. The 3rd issue related to the extent of corruptness and inside trades within the game. With the addition in agents in the athletics came what was known as the spile civilization, whereby big sums of hard currency was passed to procure transportation trades over other nines. It had been uncovered that wagering frauds were taking topographic point within the game. These were all causes for concern. Forth on the list looked at how all communities were being represented in regard of their engagement, spectatorship and disposal. Top of the list was the inclusion of females within the game, nevertheless, this shortly included people with disablements and cultural minorities. Finally, there was a belief that clubs both professional and amateur could and should affect themselves with programmes in their communities. This concerns the development and instruction of immature football players between the age of 5 and 15 every bit good as inventing a community development plan where football would be used as a societal intercession. Over the last 14 old ages policy and academic work on all these facets has shown important addition. A major drift for this came from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport when they commissioned the Football Task Force who were responsible for fresh disapprobation of the FA, in the signifier of documents, texts and books, which called for a greater betterment in their administration of the athletics. However, defeat grew due to the obstinate stance taken by the FA in regard of this affair which in bend saw farther force per unit area applied by a twine of Curates of Sport. In 2004 the FA Council authorised Lord Burns to carry on a reappraisal on the athletics, which after the concluding study saw the FA commit to new administration processs, welcome democratic representation and promote football engagement, whatever form it takes to all. However, this was no easy undertaking as despite the enormous popularity the athletics commands, it does non hold a great standing in its history in relation to societal inclusion. The athletics has ever had a ‘club ‘ based nature about it, particularly when it comes to the male, white, aged, in-between category predomination of the regulating organic structure, that has restricted entree to football for many communities/groups and peoples over the past 100+ old ages. Discrimination in its many signifiers has been rampant within the athletics and this is argued that despite the promotions made within the athletics over the last 20 old ages or so, the stigma of these historic attitudes has left its grade Changing attitudes within the FA have led to several enterprises and runs being launched which are aimed at puting new criterions within the game as a whole. The ‘Kick It Out ‘ run, ( ab initio established in 1993 and re-launched in 2009 ) focuses on equality and inclusion within the game. It was ab initio designed as a usher for professional nines for developing and accomplishing criterions and policies within their administration, but has since cascaded down to the recreational game every bit good as community based undertakings and educational institutes to dispute favoritism, promote inclusive patterns and work for positive alteration. Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore welcomed the debut of the Equality Standard saying that: â€Å" Baseball clubs can hold an highly positive influence on their fans every bit good as in the communities around them so it ‘s of import that they show how they embrace diverseness and are unfastened and accessible to everyone. † Although there has been a positive swing in the inclusion of cultural groups in regard of their entree to football and patterned advance within it, there still remains a major on traveling undertaking for the FA to guarantee that they break down all the barriers, and non merely in regard of pulling participants to the game. The door needs to be opened to pulling possible referees, decision makers, managers, voluntaries and witnesss to the game. Another country of growing within the athletics has been within the handicapped communities. Prior to 1999 there was really limited support by the FA refering the development of disablement football, as they found it about impossible to make an inclusive scheme for handicapped football. However, in 1999 the first national disablement football programme ‘Ability Counts ‘ was launched. This was seen by many as the first stairss in placing and developing gifted participants through experient coaching and led the manner to increasing engagement in the disablement game. In response to several Government policy paperss in 2001 the FA produced a strategic model for football development in England. One of the cardinal points within this papers was entitled ‘Opportunities for all ‘ which charged the FA with the duty to guarantee everybody had the chance to play, manager, manage, referee and be witnesss irrespective of their race, civilization, faith, gender, ability, sexual orientation, ethnicity or societal position. In add-on to this the FA besides introduced its first Disability Football Strategy ( 2004-2006 ) and this gave manner to incorporating disablement football into the ‘mainstream ‘ . Disability football now has a overplus of conferences, non merely across the state but nationally every bit good. About all of the 92 football conference nines every bit good as non conference nines have some signifier of disablement development. Disability football ‘ representation at International degrees is fast developing, with squads now viing in European and World Championships. The England National Squad boasts 7 different damage squads covering Amputee, Blind, Cerebral Palsy, Deaf, Learning Disability, Partially Sighted and Women ‘s Deaf squad. Many chances have opened up for those interested in working with handicapped football players either at club degree or in the community. The FA ‘s class on ‘Coaching Disabled Football players ‘ is designed to give already qualified football managers and instructor ‘s alike a scope of thoughts and patterns to enable the inclusion of handicapped participants in football Sessionss within mainstream or d amage specific Sessionss. A cardinal component of the FA ‘s scheme of inclusivity has been the debut of mini association football, which is played with smaller squads such as 5, 6 and 7-a-side The exclusive intent of the debut of mini association football back in the 1990s was to enable kids under the age of 11 to bask the game on a smaller graduated table. This allowed the kid to hold more touches of the ball, developing their creativeness and set the phase for them to develop their accomplishments. However, due to its popularity mini association football spread across the state like wildfire and within 18 months nines countrywide had recruited squads of all ages under the age of 10. As you might anticipate, these lucifers are frequently watched by the parents, defenders, friends and relations, which frequently creates an unwelcome pressurised environment for the kid. Concerns on what impact this may hold on the kid ‘s public assistance has been covered within the work of Brackenridge et Al †˜s ( 2007 ) , and moreover the effects of some of the grownup input at these games has been highlighted as a job. This has been addressed by the FA with the debut of their Respect programme The biggest success the FA have had to day of the month in regard of their equality and diverseness run comes with the go oning growing of the Women ‘s and Girls ‘ game, which officially boasts more participants viing in attached competition than any other female squad athletics. Numbers have continued to lift since 1993, when the figure of female participants was said to be about 10,000, compared to today where it is over 180,000. This without a uncertainty will raise the profile of the female game even more within local communities. The promotions made through the publicity of the game over the old ages has opened manner to a battalion of classs that persons can now take to acquire formal makings that enable greater participant in the universe of football. There are varied degrees of expertness that can be achieved through the classs that cater for Coaches, Referees, Sports Scientists and Medics, Psychologists, those involved with Child Protection and Safeguarding and FA Coachs who are involved with training the managers. These classs can be farther pursued to Level 4+ through University. However, due to the FA ‘s changeless ordinance of the athletics to guarantee that all participants are being educated in the right mode, it has become indispensable that all ‘educational Centres ‘ whatever their pretense, adhere to the professional values set out by the administration. The NVQ classs for illustration h ave a really rigorous appraisal process to guarantee that all countries of instruction are being met. As the scholar begins their journey on the class they are assessed continually by theory and practical activities designed to prove how far they have travelled. These appraisals are chiefly conducted by the topic instructor nevertheless, over the class twelvemonth internal vouchers from the institute and external vouchers from the presenting organic structure every bit good as the FA execute their ain appraisals. On top of this there are reviews from OFSTED who will describe on the quality of the class. All those involved with learning within the instruction and preparation sectors have to play a critical function to guarantee that professional development demands are continually met. This begins from the design and bringing of the classs, whether its Football Coaching or Child Protection, working with the feedback gathered from such appraisals, observations and reviews is indispensable to the academic and accomplishments development docket. Having worked as a football manager before come ining learning I can to the full appreciate the demand for professionalism within the acquisition sector, holding upheld the criterions set out by the FA for many old ages. Both managers and instructors likewise need to demo a high degree of committedness to back uping pupil acquisition, and within that committedness the values and attitudes that underpin the work of instructors should ever be incorporated. Each instructor should by taking to accomplish this by holding high outlooks of all pupils, helping and back uping accomplishments and raising the saloon for them to force even higher ; handling all pupils with the same regard no affair what their cultural, faith or cultural background ; and ever advancing positive values, attitudes and behavior. It is besides indispensable that all instructors and managers take duty for their ain continued professional development, every bit good as bettering their ain instruction through self-motiv ation and contemplation of their ain pattern. I personally use a wise man who has aided my acquisition and development vastly. Through the usage of my wise man I have been able to make and accomplish finishs that have been laid out for me. This has been possible due to the partnership I have built with my wise man over the old ages. Bing a trusted co-worker, working along side them has helped me to critically measure my ain instruction in regard of analyzing my strengths and failings, which in bend has developed my instruction accomplishments and professional qualities within the function. Taking a professional stance when meeting duties, being antiphonal to advice, and taking a positive attack to the function are all indispensable for this partnership to work. Between the two of us we have brought many different accomplishments, thoughts and solutions to the class we both teach, which has helped develop the current construction of the class. This has besides been made accomplishable through the work we both do with the County FA. As antecedently mentioned, the FA behavior appraisals and ratings of their ain, throughout the continuance of the class. These look at content, quality, training methods, ratings and appraisals. Regular meetings are held with FA Tutors and Coach Educators to discourse and guarantee that all classs being put on meet the criterions set out by the FA and fall into line with the outlooks of current course of study and pupil development. Kolb ‘s Experiential Learning Cycle ( 1984 ) is an of all time on traveling procedure for both the FA awarding organic structures, instructors, managers and pupils likewise, leting for development demands of pedagogue and pupil to be met at all times. To better my ain development I have embarked on fostering my cognition of training on two foreparts. First, I have undertaken my 3rd training making, the FA Level 3/UEFA B Licence, which in coaching footings is the start of the serious terminal of the concern. This will give me more insight into the game and will decidedly heighten the learning experience of the pupils. Second, The FA has late introduced a new twine of training makings designed at training kids. The FA Youth Award has been designed to provide strictly for the demands of pupils from the ages of 5-15. The initial faculties of the class looks at how to make the right environment for the kid to larn and how to develop pattern Sessionss which can be tailored harmonizing to the age, ability and experience of different immature participants. This will be my following venture when I have successfully passed my the FA Level 3/UEFA B Licence as I believe this cognition would be priceless plus to my go oning turning arsenal of learning cognition and resources. The journey football has made over the last 20 old ages has been slightly of a rough one, However, the message the FA are directing out is that football is for everyone and this grounds can now be seen within towns and communities and even farther afield in many states across the universe. The continued advancement made by the FA by presenting new and improved classs, every bit good as supplying an on-line resource called FA Learning, is promoting to state the least. Football has become an instruction in itself whereby those involved addition cognition and development through the proficient, physical, psychological and societal facets of the game. Whether there is a turning hereafter within educational institutes for the instruction of managers ‘ remains to be seen, in visible radiation of the recent fiscal cuts implemented by the authorities that has affected many athleticss classs state broad within schools and colleges. However, the FA will go on to endeavor to bring forth q uality classs, managers and pedagogues in its mission to convey football to all. Mention
